The American Cancer Society selected Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas as the location of its newest Hope Lodge, a home-like facility that offers free accommodations for cancer patients who have to travel long distances for their care. Baylor Scott & White Health has donated the use of prime real estate, valued at $4 million, to the American Cancer Society for this initiative. This location will also serve as the regional headquarters for the American Cancer Society.
Funding for Hope Lodge Dallas relies solely on philanthropic support, and approximately $25 million is needed for capital expenses, annual programming and operations. To date, more than $14 million has been raised thanks to generous support from numerous donors.
Baylor Scott & White treats thousands of cancer patients who travel more than 40 miles from home for their care. DFW is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country without a Hope Lodge. This facility fills a huge need.
"Hope Lodge Dallas is going to be an incredible resource for the citizens of this region, particularly those patients interested in enrolling in important clinical trials," said Joyce O’Shaughnessy, M.D., the Celebrating Women Chair in Breast Cancer Research. "The number of appointments required for clinical trial participants can be prohibitive to those who live far away, but the Hope Lodge is going to make it a lot more feasible for people to enroll and participate in promising experimental therapies for their cancer."
