Internationally recognized transplant care in Dallas

Baylor Scott & White Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute at Baylor University Medical Center is an internationally renowned destination for transplant care, one of the largest in the nation and the highest volume transplant center in Texas. Established in 1985, we offer comprehensive treatments for heart, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, uterus and islet cell transplantation and have earned a reputation for excellence and innovation in patient care and research.

Some of our recent innovations and milestones include:

Recently celebrated our 10,000th solid organ transplant in July 2021. BUMC is the first and only transplant program in Texas to surpass this milestone, which includes heart, lung, liver, pancreas and uterus transplants.
We are the only program in the world to offer robotic living donor surgery for kidney, liver and uterus transplant patients.
Our uterus transplant program has delivered more babies than any program or clinical trial in the world and is the first program in the U.S. to transplant uteri from both living and deceased donors.
We reached a milestone in helping patients with heart failure, performing our 1,000th heart transplant.
Home to the largest team of female abdominal transplant surgeons in the world—the “Fab Five”
Dr. Giuliano Testa In 2018, our chief of abdominal transplant at BUMC, Dr. Giuliano Testa, was named to Time Magazine’s “TIME 100” – Time’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Philanthropy: A Catalyst of Innovation

Transplant medicine and surgery is evolving at an astonishing rate and is a not just a story of numbers and milestones. It is a journey of scholarly investigation, collaboration and transformative education, which requires sustained philanthropic support to provide the catalyst for future transplant achievements.

Donor support can make a significant impact in the lives of patients by advancing research, investing in the training of future generations and enhancing patient-centered programs.

Research

  • The Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute is dedicated to advancing the science of transplantation and leading research that results in tangible improvement to the lives of patients and their transplant experience. As a result of research conducted here, many patients are able to benefit from new medications and treatments three to five years before they become standard therapy. In addition to advancing treatments, our team’s ethics research is also focused on increasing the number of available organs to address the more than 100,000 people in the United States who are waiting for an organ transplant today.

Medical Education

  • We are committed to supporting and training physicians and scientists in ways that will have a global impact on the field of transplantation for years to come. The Annette C. and Harold C. Simmons Transplant Institute offers an American Society of Transplant Surgeons-approved training program in liver/kidney/pancreas transplant surgery. Additionally, the cardiothoracic transplant fellowship, established in 2012, offers a subspecialty program in cardiothoracic transplant and mechanical circulatory support. To date, our fellowship programs have trained more than 40 transplant surgeons who are now operating worldwide.

Patient-Centered Programs

  • Our unwavering commitment to our patients extends beyond the compassionate and advanced medical care we provide. Through patient-centered programs, we are able to impact outcomes, care and patient experiences as they navigate what can be a complex and lengthy journey to health through transplantation. Available at no cost to our patients and supported through philanthropy, these programs include:
    • Expanding and enhancing patient education and support resources, including a comprehensive “Training for Transplant” program to improve outcomes by providing robust fitness resources and support as well as comprehensive nutritional guidance;
    • Twice Blessed House, which is dedicated to serving transplant patients and their caregivers who live far away from the transplant center by offering temporary and affordable housing during the entire transplant process; and
    • Our Living Donor Transplant Program, which is focused on developing a robust patient-facing platform to help potential kidney and liver transplant recipients build profiles to enhance their search for a living donor.
