Annual golf tournament raises $270,000 to support medical education for Baylor Scott & White Health.
More than 160 golfers enjoyed unseasonably warm—and wildly windy—weather during the 21st Annual Grand Rounds® Golf Tournament in November, raising more than $270,000 to support graduate medical education (GME) at Baylor Scott & White Health.
“This was such a spectacular event,” said Jacob Reiss, MD, a general cardiology fellow at Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC). Dr. Reiss was one of several fellows who participated in the tournament, which was held at Omni PGA Frisco. “The venue was beautiful, and I appreciated the opportunity to spend time with members of the business community and learn about what motivates them to support graduate medical education at Baylor Scott & White.”
The need for increasing the physician workforce is critical—Texas faces a shortage of 10,000 physicians by 2032. This crisis is expected to worsen as the population of older adults grows and current physicians retire—more than 2 of 5 currently active US physicians will be 65 or older within the next decade, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. The issue is exacerbated by the limited number of residency positions nationwide, which are needed to train qualified medical school graduates.
For many Grand Rounds sponsors and donors, motivation comes from the knowledge that Baylor Scott & White doesn’t just train doctors—it shapes the country’s future physician leaders. In the next 10 years, BUMC will train more than 3,000 physicians. The impact this program will have on the future health and well-being of our communities cannot be underestimated—according to recent statistics, 65% of residents and fellows who train in Texas remain in Texas to provide care for its citizens.
“Philanthropic support through events like Grand Rounds helps promote the health and well-being of our community by nurturing the best and brightest minds, equipping them to provide safe, high-quality and compassionate patient care,” said Norm Bagwell, board chair for Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation. “We’re incredibly grateful for the continued support of donors and sponsors who are committed to advancing the future of healthcare.”
Since the inaugural tournament, generous players and sponsors have raised more than $3.8 million for GME programs at BUMC.
