Genetic Counseling
Baylor Scott & White’s Genetic Counseling Program gives patients the knowledge to take control of their health, assessing risk for cancer, heart disease and more. With donor support, this vital program has expanded, helping more people make informed decisions about prevention and early detection.
Knowledge is power
Medical research continues to uncover critical links between genetic alterations and an increased risk for cancer, heart disease, and other serious conditions. These inherited mutations can impact entire families, making it essential for individuals to understand their genetic risks.
When people are aware of their predisposition, they can take proactive steps—such as increased screening and preventive measures—to detect diseases at an earlier, more treatable stage.
Breaking barriers to genetic counseling
Despite the benefits of genetic testing, many individuals remain unaware of their inherited risks or lack access to specialized genetic counseling, particularly those outside major metropolitan areas. Without guidance, patients may miss critical opportunities for early diagnosis and disease prevention.
At Baylor University Medical Center, a dedicated team of four genetic counselors serves a growing number of patients, offering expert guidance to those battling cancer or with a family history of the disease. Last year alone, the team provided care to 1,300 new patients.
Recognizing the need to expand access, Baylor Scott & White also launched a telegenetics program to extend genetic counseling services to rural communities, ensuring that more individuals—regardless of location—receive the vital support they need.
Personalized guidance for a healthier future
The Baylor Scott & White Genetic Counseling program connects patients with specially trained genetic counselors and medical geneticists who analyze personal and family medical histories to assess potential risks.
Through comprehensive evaluations and, when necessary, genetic testing, patients receive a personalized risk assessment. If a genetic mutation is detected, counselors provide tailored recommendations for monitoring, prevention, and ongoing care—empowering individuals to make informed health decisions.
Beyond cancer genetics, demand for genetic counseling continues to grow across various medical fields. Expanding services would allow the team to meet increasing requests for genetic counseling related to other conditions, including heart disease and neurological disorders.
Your impact: Expanding access, changing lives
The demand for services is outpacing current capacity, with growing referrals and daily requests for broader genetic counseling beyond cancer-related risks. Expanding the program by just one additional genetic counselor would allow BSW to reach 400 more individuals each year—people who might otherwise struggle to access this potentially life-changing care.
By investing in this vital service, you can help provide individuals and families with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their health—leading to earlier diagnoses, better treatment outcomes and improved lives.
