The annual Texas Nurses Association Award focuses on recognizing the contributions of registered nurses across the state, and this year, 12 of the 25 Outstanding Texas Nurses are nurses at Baylor Scott & White Health. Honorees are those who create a culture of care, play a vital role in supporting health and wellness, and serve as innovators, community contributors or frontline heroes.
“Baylor Scott & White is home to more than 15,000 nurses who provide care across dozens of communities in North and Central Texas,” said Pete McCanna, chief executive officer for Baylor Scott & White. “This latest recognition reflects their unwavering dedication to our patients and builds on Baylor Scott & White’s legacy of excellence in nursing.”
Investing in those who give their all
Twelve of the Texas Nurses Association 25 Outstanding Texas Nurses are from Baylor Scott & White Health.

With servant hearts and healing touches, nurses are the heartbeat of Baylor Scott & White. Thanks to generous donor support, the System has been able to make significant investments in programs that enhance excellence, education and leadership for these caregivers.
Most recently, when the System was impacted by the nationwide nursing shortage, donors generously supported the expansion of the Nurse Residency Program. This one-year residency program, which boasts a retention rate of more than 92%, provides new graduate nurses the opportunity to develop professionally and receive the tools, training and support needed to thrive
in their careers.
“Our aggressive snap-back plan is successfully working to rebuild our nursing workforce,” said Janice Walker, DHA, RN, chief nursing officer for Baylor Scott & White. “Baylor Scott & White’s commitment to our nurses, backed by philanthropy, has already led to a nearly 50% reduction in the vacancy rate. By the end of this year, we will have trained approximately 1,700 new nurses—a three-fold increase from our typical graduate nurse recruitment goal of 500 per year.”
Better prepared nurses lead to better care for patients, ultimately improving outcomes and reducing risks for patients.
