Putting your whole heart into something important to you is the best way to achieve great things. In that vein, two individuals stand out for their commitment to Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano. These gentlemen have provided wholehearted leadership and support for the medical staff and the hospital’s employees since the facility opened in 2007. David Brown, MD, president and chairman of the medical staff, and Mark Valentine, the hospital’s president, were honored by their peers for their dedication to helping the hospital grow and succeed, all while providing safe, quality, compassionate care to its patients.

At a ceremony held to unveil the hospital’s new north tower, Dr. Brown and Mark Valentine were recognized. A special fundraising initiative from hospital colleagues honored the work of these dedicated leaders that many say have helped shape a passionate culture dedicated to excellence in patient care. Over 95 physicians participated in this effort, which is approaching $2.5 million in gifts.
The new auditorium was named in honor of Dr. Brown. The space will be used for lectures and other education initiatives for physicians and caregivers from North Texas and beyond. “Dr. Brown has always been a big advocate for physician education and teaching the next generation,” Dennis Gable, MD, explained. Dr. Gable collaborated with Will Ryan, MD, and Trent Pettijohn, MD, to lead the fundraising campaign, which will provide support for cardiovascular research and medical education initiatives.
Visitors to the hospital will be greeted in the lobby named for Mark Valentine. It is a welcoming space named after the man whose leadership and collaboration with physicians helped bring a community-based hospital to the forefront as one of the most renowned cardiac hospitals in the country.
At the unveiling, the gifts of eponymous spaces were a surprise to both leaders. “Mark had his back to us as we began the presentation because he was trying to help people get through the door. He is always trying to help and do whatever needs to be done,” Dr. Pettijohn said. “His wife had to turn him around and explain that we were talking about him!”
Hospital physicians stated that the accomplishments of Dr. Brown and Mark Valentine cannot be emphasized enough. The duo’s leadership inspires employees with their vision for patient-centered, kind-hearted care. “I hope it will emphasize the focus that we have had here from the very start—the highest quality and extraordinary service for the patient,” Dr. Ryan expressed.
