Shuttee family on journey to support compassionate care at Baylor Scott & White

Giving back to their community has always been important to David and Karen Shuttee, which has led them to seek meaningful ways to support causes close to their hearts, especially healthcare.
“We feel that Baylor Scott & White Dallas Foundation is essential to advancing the mission-driven work of Baylor Scott & White, enabling patient care that enhances the health and well-being of our community,” David Shuttee, a Dallas-based executive, said. “There are many ways to support Baylor, including the ‘vehicles’ we’ve used: cash or cash equivalents (such as IRA distributions), life insurance policies and our favorite, Qualified Charitable Gift Annuities.”
For the past four decades, the Shuttees have graciously given to support various causes at Baylor Scott & White, including the Dermatology Residency, Gene and Jerry Jones Family Hope Lodge, Texas Cancer Interception Institute and to the healthcare system’s general operating fund.
Karen and David experienced the same hope and healing through Baylor Scott & White they help provide for others and decided to do even more. In 2012, Karen received treatment for early-stage fallopian tube cancer. Following her recovery, the Shuttees made a gift to the Baylor Scott & White Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center in honor of the care Karen received. She and David donated their existing life insurance policies—“with the agreement that no one would try to ‘trigger’ these policies while we were still living!” David joked.
When Karen was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer in 2015, the Shuttees again turned to Baylor Scott & White for her care and continued to give back in gratitude.
Working with the Foundation, the Shuttees discovered a new avenue for their giving: Qualified Charitable Gift Annuities (QCGA). Through this vehicle, the Shuttees have supported nursing, cancer care and cardiology research at Baylor Scott & White and have gifted seven annuities at various tax-free and taxable income levels.
“Since we already had Baylor included in our estate planning, the effects and benefits of a QCGA seemed to be a perfect opportunity for Karen and me,” David said. “We had never heard of the QCGA before but now believe they have been a wonderful way for Karen and me to continue to support Baylor Scott & White.”
“The Shuttees are a great example of people who are making a difference for patients through maximizing their gifts,” said Craig Foster, senior director of foundation relations and gift planning. “They’ve identified tax-smart ways to give to Baylor Scott & White that will benefit both our mission and them for years to come.”
