Transforming women’s health through uterus transplantation

The Uterus Transplant Program at Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC) is the first and largest program of its kind, offering women with uterine factor infertility—a condition that affects 1 in 500 women—the opportunity to achieve pregnancy. This internationally recognized program is innovating new advancements in fertility treatments and transplant medicine.

Addressing an unmet need in fertility care

For women with uterine factor infertility, traditional fertility treatments such as surrogacy or adoption do not offer the ability to experience pregnancy firsthand. Uterus transplantation offers a potential solution for these women, but the procedure is complex, involving organ procurement, transplantation, and ongoing immunosuppressive therapy.

The uterus transplant program at Baylor University Medical Center

Launched in 2016 with the help of philanthropic support, the Uterus Transplant Program began as a landmark clinical trial in collaboration with the Baylor Scott & White Research Institute. It has since become the largest and most successful program of its kind in the world.

Under the leadership of a multidisciplinary team of specialists in transplant, gynecology, obstetrics, and maternal-fetal medicine, the program has achieved remarkable success.

This is the only program in the United States to use both living and deceased donor uteri, and it was the first to deliver two babies from a single transplanted uterus. With 36 transplants performed and 25 babies born, BUMC continues to lead the way in uterus transplantation, offering life-changing fertility options to women who have no other recourse.

Your gift: Access to life-enhancing uterus transplants

Philanthropy was instrumental in launching the Uterus Transplant Program and donor contributions continue to fuel groundbreaking research, expand access to care and support clinical programs that refine transplant procedures and improve patient outcomes. Your gift can play a vital role in advancing the science of uterus transplantation and ensuring that BUMC remains a leader in women’s health.
