Palliative Care Child Life Program
The Baylor Scott & White Palliative Care Child Life Program supports children and families of adult patients facing a health crisis. Fully supported by philanthropy, this vital service is provided at no cost, impacting over 1,500 children each year.
Helping children cope with a loved one’s health crisis
Children of parents or loved ones facing a serious health crisis often experience confusion, anxiety and emotional distress. Navigating these feelings can be especially challenging when a child is unsure how to process the trauma surrounding a loved one’s life-changing illness or injury.
Bridging the gap in support for kids
Traditionally, child life specialists are found in pediatric hospitals. Baylor Scott & White—one of the only healthcare systems in the nation to provide child life specialists in adult acute care hospitals—is leading the way in supporting children and families, but this essential program relies completely on philanthropic support.

Child life specialists are trained to help children process their emotions when a parent or loved one is seriously ill or injured. Additionally, they help parents openly and honestly explain a serious diagnosis to their children, impacting families by:
- Reducing anxiety and stress
- Preparing children for hospital visits and treatments
- Supporting children in expressing their feelings
- Addressing changes in a parent’s appearance and physical abilities
The largest program of its kind in the nation, the Baylor Scott & White Child Life Program includes 10 child life specialists serving families across the System. In 2023, the program provided care for over 1,500 children through 3,840 visits. Since its inception, nearly 14,000 families and 23,000 children have benefited from this vital service.
